Play to Read @ Your Library
The ABBE Library System wants to ensure young children are ready to enter kindergarten with the skills needed to be successful readers. As part of the push towards early literacy, local libraries have launched "Play to Read" stations with materials to encourage interactive play.

While most children aren't taught to read until kindergarten, reading skills begin at birth. "We encourage caregivers to interact with young children by talking, writing, reading, playing, and singing," says Kimberly McSpadden, Aiken Children's Librarian. "By interacting at the Play to Read stations, it becomes play with a purpose so children can develop the skills necessary to read."

Each ABBE library has a Play to Read station with themed materials that can be used while visiting the library. Materials routinely rotate, so there are opportunities to experience something new at each visit. Children and caregivers can play, read, and grow while exploring materials such as puppets, magnets, building blocks, puzzles, and other activities that support early literacy.

The length of a wireless session on ABBEnet is four hours. When a user’s session expires at the four hour mark they simply log back on to ABBEnet, agree once again to the policy on the splash page and receive an additional four hour session. There is no restriction on consecutive sessions.
